In this conversation, we speak with the founder of Contemporary Foods, who shares how cultural inspiration, food tech, and a strong commitment to wellness came together to build a company that balances taste, nutrition, and sustainability

  1. How did the idea for Contemporary Foods Company begin? What personal or professional motivation led to its founding?

The idea for Contemporary Foods Company took root during my time studying in the United States. While looking for healthy snacks, I often found that many of the nutritious energy bars had dates as their primary ingredient. This struck a chord with me, as dates are a cherished part of Saudi heritage. It sparked the thought: why not create similar wholesome products back home, leveraging our local resources?

This idea lingered in my mind for a few years until I returned to Saudi Arabia. I began experimenting at home, aiming to offer our community healthier snack alternatives using local ingredients. This was the origin of Contemporary Foods. Once the factory was established, it allowed me to expand the product line, ensuring that each product contained zero added sugar, zero artificial ingredients, and zero preservatives, staying true to our vision of promoting natural, healthy living.

  1. What market gap or need did you identify in the healthy food space?

In the beginning, the gap in the healthy food market wasn’t immediately clear, but I could see that the demand for nutritious, clean-label products was growing rapidly in the region. While the local market wasn’t as large or mature as the global market, I had confidence that local consumers would soon catch up with global trends. This foresight drove me to create products that not only filled this emerging gap but also anticipated the evolving preferences of health-conscious consumers in Saudi Arabia.

  1. How has modern food technology helped you develop your products such as health bars?

In developing our products, we focus on using processing techniques that naturally preserve shelf life without the need for artificial preservatives. We strive to select natural ingredients that inherently support the product’s freshness and quality. This approach allows us to maintain the nutritional integrity and flavor of our products while ensuring they remain convenient and safe for our customers.

  1. What were the biggest challenges you faced—whether in production, consumer behavior, or other areas?

One of the biggest challenges was overcoming initial skepticism from consumers about healthy products’ taste and affordability. We are entering a market where less nutritious products often dominate due to their low cost, extended shelf life, and strong consumer familiarity. These products benefit from ingredients like sugar, which not only enhance flavor but also act as natural preservatives—making them more convenient and economically appealing for both producers and consumers.

Introducing healthier alternatives in this landscape required a patient, education-driven approach. On the production side, developing a scalable process that maintains the quality of natural, perishable ingredients involved a steep learning curve.

 Navigating regulatory frameworks and building a reliable supply chain also posed significant hurdles early on.

  1. How do you balance flavor and high nutritional value in your offerings?

Balancing flavor and nutrition is a constant focus in product development. We prioritize natural ingredients and avoid artificial additives, relying on the innate flavors of dates, nuts, and spices to create delicious profiles.

Through careful formulation and testing, we ensure our products deliver both taste and health benefits, appealing to consumers who want indulgence without compromise. Consumer feedback plays an important role in refining each recipe.

  1. How does sustainability play a role in your business model? What steps do you take to reduce environmental impact?

In the early stages of a company, it can be difficult to address all aspects of sustainability at once. However, we’ve made a conscious effort to prioritize sourcing local ingredients to reduce transportation emissions and support regional agriculture.

We always aim to implement lean methodologies in our production and supply chain operations to minimize various forms of waste—whether material, time, or energy. We’re also exploring sustainable packaging options and continuously looking for ways to improve efficiency. While we’re still evolving, our commitment to responsible growth is clear and ongoing.

  1. How are you contributing to food awareness and education in the community? Do you run any outreach or wellness initiatives?

Although one of our core goals is to contribute meaningfully to the community in the areas of health and wellness education, we have yet to launch the full-scale initiatives we envision. So far, our efforts have been limited to simple social media content that highlights the differences between healthier options and common processed products. That said, our plan is much bigger. We aim to build impactful, long-term programs that raise real awareness and empower healthier lifestyle choices.

In the meantime, we actively seek opportunities to align with government-endorsed initiatives and collaborate with major organizations or entities focused on health and wellness. We see these platforms as key spaces to promote our healthy products and reinforce our message about clean, conscious eating.

  1. What is your vision for the coming years? Where do you see Contemporary Foods Company in five years?

In the next five years, I envision Contemporary Foods Company as a leading force in the regional healthy food industry, recognized for innovation, quality, and sustainability. More than that, we aim to become the largest nutrition powerhouse in the Kingdom—one that influences not only what people eat but also how they think about food and wellness.

 Beyond the Kingdom, we have strong ambitions to expand internationally and introduce our uniquely local, healthy products to global markets. We plan to broaden our product portfolio, deepen market penetration both locally and abroad, and continue investing in R&D to anticipate emerging trends.

 Ultimately, we want to inspire healthier lifestyles worldwide while maintaining strong ties to our cultural roots.
